Kathmandu - The seven-day deadline set by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology for social media registration is expiring tonight (Wednesday) at midnight. The ministry is preparing to hold a special meeting tomorrow (Thursday) to take a final decision on those platforms that have not completed the registration process.

The government introduced the registration process with the objective of regulating social media, ensuring legal accountability, and maintaining transparency. According to the ministry, platforms operating in Nepal must ensure the protection of user data, prevent online misuse, maintain transparency in the taxation system, and comply with the country’s legal framework.

So far, the ministry has not made public how many social media platforms have registered. However, high-level sources have indicated that platforms failing to register or comply with the mandatory legal process may face strict action from the government. Officials have clarified that the registration is not meant to exert unnecessary pressure but to create a safer and more transparent digital environment in Nepal.
